The Talus (1975), Thomas Arge
Oil on canvas, 95 x 100 cm.
A hoard of gems on the mountain? No, it is an artist’s interpretation of all the hues of basalt, tuff and lichen, which to most people just look like a greyish brown mass.
Discovering the Faroese outfields as a motif is Thomas Arge’s artistic achievement. His exact motif is often difficult to pinpoint, but here perhaps we find ourselves in Norðradalur, a location the artist enjoyed visiting.
The stone heap as a mosaic indicates the influence of Icelandic Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885-1972), who helped Arge to find himself early on. The coarse strokes, the thick layer of colour and bulging surface is, however, characteristic of his own art, which here fuses decoration and raw power.
