Café (1938), Sámal Joensen-Mikines
Oil on canvas, 118 x 132 cm.
Nightlife and jealousy! Two men wearing flat caps are enjoying a beer at a café, presumably sailors with shore leave. At the same table sits a lonely and despairing man. He is staring into an empty bottle, jealous of the adoring couple behind him.
The motif and colours reveal the influence of Norwegian artist Edward Munch (1863-1944), while the cylindrical forms and thick layer of paint echo Danish modernist Vilhelm Lundstrøm (1893-1950).
Mikines’ imagery was Faroese, but he also painted motifs from Denmark such as this one, which draws on inspiration from a bar he used to visit in Copenhagen.
