The Board of Directors in “Trøllakambur”, Ltd. (1952), William Heinesen
Pastel, 740 x 540 mm.

The great author of the Faroe Islands was also a fine artist. In his artistic output the pastel played an important part and these works were inspired by the Norwegian author and illustrator Theodor Kittelsen (1857-1914) in both style and subject.

Kittelsen’s world of trolls is recreated by Heinesen. In the landscapes there appears to be a mystical mood. And here we have the “trolls” themselves in a wonderful caricature of the Board of Directors of the only insurance company in the Faroes at the time, which thus had a monopoly.

“Trøllakambur” (on the back of the chair) was not the name of the insurance company. The Faroese word actually means “fern” but can also be understood as trolls meeting their match!
