About Julie Sass and ‘Vandretilstande’ (States of Wandering)
The visual artist, Julie Sass is a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, Schools of Visual Arts and New York University (MFA). She later took an MA in Theory & Mediation at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, Schools of Visual Arts. Sass has published several books and pamphlets, particularly in the context of exhibitions she has curated. Her artist books, ‘Volume Rhythm Matter’ and ‘Lemon Mood’ are included in the MET’s collection in New York.
The book features 12 drawings on black paper and 40 texts, written during the first long Corona lockdown in autumn 2020, when it was impossible to travel. ‘Vandretilstande’ consists of several texts. Walking out into landscape and intimate situations intertwine. With a mountain featured in just about every piece, the texts amount to quasi meditations or daily treks into the unknown. She draws on dream scenarios and things someone whispered late at night. Traditions and observations by various people are interwoven, so the voices we hear shift from female to male.
There is no plot, just fragments linked together by various associations. They can be read in a continuous stream or as sporadic, impactful pieces.
The drawings serve as visual impact rather than illustration and were conceived as an extension of the writing process. They guide the reader in and out of various abstract universes.
Artist book, published by Hurricane Publishing (2022).
