Large donation of works by Mikines from a private owner
We are delighted to announce that the National Gallery of the Faroe Islands has received a major donation of art from a private individual in Denmark. It is a donation worth millions, consisting of an impressive 8 works by the great Faroese artist Sámal Joensen-Mikines (1906-79).
Karina Lykke Grand, director of the museum, says:
“We are hugely grateful for this generous donation of significant works. They represent a unique complement to the museum’s collection of works by Mikines. We are so looking forward to showing the paintings to visitors when the museum reopens on 1 February.”
The works were created between 1931 and 1962. There are several different kinds of motifs in the paintings. For example, there are landscape paintings from both the Faroe Islands and Denmark, an indoor scene entitled ‘Drink’ and two large paintings with Christian motifs.
