Music in Art
25 August 2023 - 4 February 2024

Music and visual art are in many ways tightly linked. The most famous example of this is perpaps one of the pioneers in abstract art, Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). Kandinsky was very influenced and inspired by music in his art. He believed that music could show the way to a new art that was not affected by the material appearances of things, but rather could show a deeper, inner truth. As a result, one can see a certain musicality in Kandinsky’s paintings.

The same is true for many Faroese artists. For instance William Heinesen, Frits Johannesen and Astri Luihn have worked a great deal with art which in one way or another deals with music. While William Heinesen has made many humoristic pictures of for instance famous composers or musicians, Astri Luihn makes more abstract paintings while listening to music.

In the exhibition “Music in Art” you can experience a large selection of artworks by Faroese artists which have been especially fascinated by music. The artworks depict and grapple with the music in many different ways and through different media. The exhibition includes paintings, graphic works, sculpture, photographs and video.

Works by the following artists are on display:
