THE ARTIST'S SPRING EXHIBITION 2020
6 March 2020 - 1 June 2020

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first Faroese Spring Exhibition. The National Gallery of the Faroe Islands celebrates this with a large exhibition with more than 100 works by more than 50 artists. The exhibition is organized by The Faroese Society of Visual Arts which every spring arranges an exhibition with the best of Faroese art.

The Spring Exhibition 2020 is divided into three sections. The first section looks back by displaying art from the first three exhibitions, from 1990 to 92. The second part consists of artworks by members of The Faroese Society of Visual Arts. The third section is works selected by a committee.

1.   ART FROM THE BEGINNING

In the first section of the exhibition you will find a selection of artworks from the Spring Exhibitions in 1990, 1991 and 1992.

A textile artwork hanging from the ceiling greets the guests at this year’s Spring Exhibition: “From History” is a work by Astrid Andreasen composed of knitted sleeves that together form a long band - an unbroken story. The artwork was part of the first Spring Exhibition in 1990. The National Gallery purchased the work, and since then it has been an important part of the museum’s collection. It addresses the course of life and the development of art simultaneously.

Among the artworks in the first section you will find works made out of handmade paper and plants and works on newsprint. In the two display cases you can see newspaper clippings and programmes from the first exhibitions.

2.   ART FROM THE ARTISTS

In the second section you can see artworks by members of the Faroese Society of Visual Arts.

This year the artists have been challenged by a restriction: the artworks must not be larger than 1x1 meter – a challenge many artists have taken upon themselves.

Among the many artworks you can experience fabric collages, video art, wood sculptures, graphic prints and paintings.

3.   SELECTED ARTWORKS

It has been tradition everyone can submit artworks to the Spring Exhibition. To ensure a certain kind of quality, a committee evaluates and selects the artworks that are displayed.

This has been the case since the first Spring Exhibition in 1990, and again this year the committee consists of three artists from the association. The committee has focused on artworks by upcoming artists and to display a wide range of artistic expressions. In this section you will find photographs, pottery, knitwear, woodwork as well as a lot of paintings.

The exhibition is accompanied by a programme with information about the artworks: artist, title, medium and price.
