Less is North, an exhibition featuring minimalist landscape photography from three Nordic countries? The title contains no logic, but implies a poetic connection to the content. The title is also a tribute to ‘Less is More’, the famous slogan of the ultimate minimalist of Modernist architecture, Mies van der Rohe. His statement was later to be distorted humorously by younger architects: ‘Less is a Bore’ (Robert Venturi) and ‘Yes is More’ (Bjarke Ingels). Less is North takes us back to the point of origin.

The exhibition features photographic works by Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir (IS), Per Bak Jensen (DK) and Ingi Joensen (FO). Not only are the artists Nordic; so are their subjects. All three have a minimalist approach to the art of photography, and it is that, which highlights the character of the photos as constructed images rather than mere reproductions of reality. At the same time, each of the three photographic artists has his own personal view. Consequently, the works in the exhibition complement and counter one another within the niche of minimalistic photography.

While Ingi Joensen is the most recognised photographic artist in the Faroe Islands, Per Bak Jensen is a pioneer in the genre of photographic art in Denmark. In this exhibition they are joined by Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir, one of Iceland’s most prominent younger photographic artists.
