Red rain (1980), Ingálvur av Reyni
Oil on canvas, 65 x 50 cm.

Rain is colourless, yet here it is red. The calm and simple red background is broken up by intuitive brushstrokes in hues of black and grey. Dark and light splashes of diluted colour streak the surface.

The red colour might be a symbolic expression of passion, fervour and love, but could also denote blood, pain and ruin. In the Biblical account of the Last Days it even rains blood (Revelation 8:7). Then again, perhaps the picture is just about a rainy day among the red buildings at Tinganes!

The painting is non-figurative. It is a representation of a reality that cannot be defined, but Ingálvur av Reyni approaches through paint. We take part in the process as we form our own notion of its meaning within the interplay between the title and the painting itself as colours, surfaces and brush strokes.
