The Hamlet of Nes (1955), Ruth Smith
Oil on canvas, 61 x 79 cm.

Summer in Nes! Ruth Smith has painted her hometown on the island of Suðuroy overlooking the fjord to the east. The colours are cool, clouds are rolling in and a rainshower is sweeping across the ness in the distance.

The picture exudes weather and energy. It is not finished, so the reality of the image also speaks to the painting itself. In a sense, it is created before our eyes.

Ruth Smith was an impressionist with a passion for the play of colours in light, but a highly strung mind is also palpable in the vehement style of painting.

In a later painting (1957. O.c, 53 x 83 cm) the hamlet by the fjord seems depicted in an emotional storm, it looks as if Doomsday has descended on Nes.
