It looks like an everyday scene, but is far more than that. The artist’s old mother has taken a seat without removing her apron and scarf around her head. The old wrinkly face and the coarse hands testify to a long and laborious life.

The oversized hands are folded in prayer and on the table behind is the Bible witnessing a life grounded in faith. The book and the hands correspond with the tiny bird on the floor sitting in the light from a window. Its cross-shaped shadow reminds us of how not a single sparrow falls to the ground without the will of God (Matt. 10,29).
