Kirkjubøreyn (1974), Thomas Arge
Oil on canvas, 100 x 150 cm.

Southwest of Tórshavn rises a rugged mountain crest capped by a rocky plateau named after Kirkjubøur, a village steeped in history located on the other side of the mountain.

In itself the stone desert is an almost supernatural landscape, and with Thomas Arge it resembles a rain of ash with its myriad dots and strokes in grey and black.

The colour is splashed on the canvas, making this a form of Faroese action painting where the paint itself and the physical energy are central to the work.

Only the high horizon hints at a landscape, but it is as though we have been whisked to another planet.
