You need a mirror and a steady look for a self-portrait. Here this look has become part of two different ways of seeing oneself.
In the self-portrait the artist is not as important as the person. Seen from above, Ruth Smith seems fragile and is almost engulfed by her surroundings.
Her gazing eyes are directed towards the world as colours - as timbres, harmonies and tensions, later to be recreated on the canvas with intense brushstrokes.
