You need a mirror and a steady look for a self-portrait. Here this look has become part of two different ways of seeing oneself.
In the self-portrait the artist is seen from below and the palette also increases the distance to her as she is posing in the doorway in her red blouse contrasting the cool blue of the door.
Her gazing eyes are directed towards the world as colours - as timbres, harmonies and tensions, later to be recreated on the canvas with intense brushstrokes.
