Colony (2006), Edward Fuglø
Acrylic on canvas, 183 x 475 cm. Danish-Faroese Cultural Fund.

The painting has the impact of the poster and the subtlety of a painting. The picture displays a mixture of photographic naturalism in the gannets’ heads and the silhouette effect of an advertising sign in the business suits of the birds.

The gannet is the largest bird in the Faroe Islands and here they are presented in a tight formation with pointed beaks like a forest of spears. In their formal suits the gannets appear as a phalanx of power with the leading male in front.

And then there is the ambiguous title - in English - as a reference to its international content. In this bird colony the vital question is about power, a leader assuming control over others who on their part want to be like him.
