The Exhibition and Museum Building
The present gallery was opened in 1993. The north wing - the old gallery (Listaskáli),
which was built earlier by the Faroe Islands Art Society was opened in 1970. The
architect was J.P. Gregoriussen.
The Faroe Islands Art Museum was founded in 1989. The building of the very fine gallery was made possible by financial support from the Faroese government, Augustinus Fonden, Tórshavn Town Council, a bequest from the bookseller, Hans Niclasen and his wife Kate Niclasen, Knud Højgaard's Fond, Velux Fonden, Beckett-fonden, Dronning Margrethe og Prins Henriks Fond, FossBankin, the Faroe Islands Art Society and other contributors. The architects were N.F. Truelsen and J.P. Gregoriussen. The general contractor was BGW. The new building is about 1,100 square metres and the total floor space is 1,600 square metres.

The beautiful exhibition building, which is faced with black tarred wood, has elements of traditional Faroese building. A variety of rooms and halls with alternating lighting from the roof and from the side, and areas with no natural lighting, provide excellent opportunity to display the paintings, sculptures and graphic art from the permanent collection and to arrange special exhibitions, concerts and other events. From the large entrance hall, where visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee, there is a beautiful view of the park. The largest room, which is in the old part of the building, is kept exclusively for temporary exhibitions.
