Sigrun Gunnarsdóttir

Art in Focus: The Faroe Islands Art Museum

Sigrun Gunnarsdóttir (1950): The Book of Books. 2002. Oil on canvas. 130 x 95 cm.

The expression is naivistic with symbols indicating a larger world. The model is the artist's aged mother in an apron, and her rough hands symbolise a long life's hard toil.

The Bible on the desk indicates a life anchored in faith. A cruciform window lets in light on to the floor where the tiny bird testifies to the adage that not even a single sparrow falls to the ground without God's will.

As in the world of children, this world is magical.
